Complications from mumps can include encephalitis, meningitis, painful swelling of the testicles or the ovaries, pancreatitis and hearing loss.

The good news is there is a mumps vaccine that protects against the illness.

Mumps is routinely addressed with the MMR (measles, mumps and Rubella) vaccine at 12 to 15 months and 4 to 6 years.

UD encourages students and staff to receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. "The risk of infection is much, much, much greater if you've only received just one, and certainly increased further if you've received zero doses".

The mumps virus is characterized by swelling of the glands located just below or in front of the ear/jaw.
