In Endymion parade crash, new charges for suspected drunk driver

28 people were injured when a driver, who seemed to be drunk, ran into a crowd of people in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

Instead of stopping, the truck's driver then struck a parked pickup truck a few feet further toward Orleans Avenue, pushing the vehicle several feet into a man with a stroller, Tracy Shields said.

Among the injured was one police officer.

'There were bodies flying off the hood while he was still driving.' .

The drama led to authorities cautioning of a possible terrorist attack, similar to the ones seen in Munich, Germany and Nice, France previous year, only for authorities to later announce upon the man's arrest, the act was the result of the driver being 'highly intoxicated'.

Superintendent Harrison said investigators suspect the driver was intoxicated.

Though Rizzuto was initially booked on reckless operation of a vehicle, hit-and-run driving, serious injury, and two counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring, Magistrate Commissioner Robert Blackburn has said he set the high bond in anticipation of more charges based on the number of victims left injured at the crash scene.

The site says the booking is still in progress, meaning that additional charges could apply.
