Under the agreement, refugee claimants are required to request refugee protection in the first safe country they arrive in - meaning would-be claimants arriving at an official border crossing from the USA would be turned back.

That number, though, includes all people seeking asylum, not just those who crossed the border, and the government would not break down the figures.

The Canada Border Services Agency has set up a trailer near the US border to help asylum seekers through the refugee claim process and relieve some of the strain on emergency officials in the border town of Emerson, Man., about 100 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

The Federal Government responded to the concern Saturday.

This comes after United Way said there has been an overwhelming number of calls and inquiries from people inside and outside of Manitoba wanting to offer help to the latest group of newcomers now living in Winnipeg.
