First Phase polling for Manipur Assy ends, Turnout may exceed 80 pc

Phase 1-5 of UP Assembly elections has successfully concluded and the campaigning for the sixth and penultimate phase polling has ended on Thursday evening.

Polling in both Uttar Pradesh and Manipur passed off peacefully officials said barring a few incidents of "poll intimidation" which was reported from Manipur.

Heavy security is deployed to conduct trouble free polling in the 1,643 polling stations in these constituencies. Mr Leichombam Erendro, candidate of the PRJA, Thangmeiband, who was assaulted by some persons at Thangmeiband, has filed a police report naming the suspects.

Among the districts in valley areas, Imphal East district recorded a voter turnout of 87% while 86.9% in Imphal West district and Bishnupur district recorded 87.8%.

- Polling to the second phase will be held on March 8 and the result of the Manipur polls will be declared on March 11.

Chief election officer Vivek Kumar Dewangan said that as per information so far available, there was 84 per cent polling in the 38 constituencies across six districts. Reacting to the economic blockade and the Naga Peace Accord, which led to massive violence in the state last month, political parties such as Congress and BJP continuously blamed each other during their election campaigns. Although she seems to be extraordinarily silent regarding the economic blockade, but it is also evident that she in this election is not targeting to form a government but rather consolidate for herself and her party a place in the sphere of Manipur politics.

Although candidates from several parties and Independents contested in the first phase of election, the main fight is between the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) T Venkentesh told UNI here today that all arrangements for a smooth conduct of the elections have been completed and the polling personnel have started reaching their respective booths.

For the first time, there were no police or State paramilitary personnel in the polling stations.

Apart from Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, no other party leader from Delhi were visible in the campaign.

The Districts are Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau and Ballia. There were 17 Assembly constituency which had more than one woman candidate which went to the polls in UP on Saturday.

Manipur elects at least three Muslim candidates to its Assembly every year, but the BJP has fielded only one candidate from the party, whereas the Congress has fielded three of them.

About 69 percent of voting was recorded till 1 pm in the first phase of assembly elections in the state. The small state that Manipur is, media attention and opinion polls are hard to come by but one poll done by India Today-Axis projected a majority for the BJP with 31-35 seats leaving 19-24 for the Congress with the vote share being 40 and 37 per cent respectively.
