Project Scorpio and Xbox One to get Mixed Reality headsets in 2018

Microsoft is rolling out development kits for the first VR headset made by Acer later this month, but in a blog post announcing that news, it dropped an even juicier detail. This is why Windows partnered up with leading hardware companies like ASUS, Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo, and 3Glasses to create headsets that will carry the Mixed Reality platform.

The Xbox Live Creators Program will also allow developers to publish games for Xbox Scorpio when the console launches. Any user can head to their local game store, purchase an Xbox One and delve into its depths in order to develop and ship games for the console. But what is new about this mixed reality project? Mixed reality is said to create a more complex environment than what virtual reality (VR) has to offer. And that's the way it should be, according to Kipman. Phil Spencer has also stated that he wants the console to come with VR features integrated in it so that owners can have everything they need in one place. "The proper term is mixed reality". Unlike Microsoft's HoloLens, these devices aren't cordless and don't have see-through visors. They cost about $300 (roughly £250 or AU$400 converted).

But what has nearly passed unnoticed was that Microsoft has also quietly changed the name of Windows Holographic to Windows Mixed Reality. Kipman added that VR headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are also capable of mixed reality. The Acer headset and others like it are supposed to take information about the physical world and bring it into virtual reality.

But as Microsoft's own demo showed us this week, an opaque, VR-style headset can make a lot more sense for a lot more software as of today. The goal behind the system, which will be coming to every PC with the Windows 10 Creators Update, is to provide a consistent substrate for building apps that run in 3D virtual spaces, whether they're displayed by headsets with transparent or with opaque visors.

Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox Scorpio will be getting the Microsoft HoloLens tech.

For the meantime, this headset needs to be connected to a PC running Windows 10 to work.

A couple months ago, Microsoft introduced the Unified Update Platform (UUP), a new delivery technology that improves the way updates are downloaded and installed on all Windows 10 devices. The headsets will also be plug and play with no complicated setup.
