Cuomo Announces New York-Israel Commission

Andrew Cuomo has announced a new 22-member commission dedicated to strengthening economic development between New York State and Israel.

New York, along with much of the US, has seen a rise in anti-Semitic incidents of late, including a Staten Island Jewish Community Center bomb threat and a vandalized Jewish cemetery in Rochester.

Cuomo's visit, meant as a show of solidarity with the Jewish community, comes after a series of bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers across the U.S.

The Democratic governor, who is now on a diplomatic trip to Israel, says members are working to make the "partnership stronger than ever before". In the United States now we have had a rash of anti-Semitism, over 100 acts of anti-Semitism, and I am sad to say also in my state, the state of NY. "We can never, ever, let that change", Rivlin says.

Rivlin added: "The same appreciation goes to President Trump, who condemned the recent attacks".

Cuomo's office said his brief visit would include meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan.

"New York and Israel have always shared a deep cultural, social and economic bond", he said.

He also plans to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre - built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried - and the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray.

Speaking at Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial, Cuomo said the incidents, "violated every tenet of the New York State tradition".
