Facebook is launching its own video app on the Gear VR

Facebook rolled out a product in April of a year ago and around the same time Dailymotion, JW Player and Brightcove announced plugins or applications to enable 360 video.

In the online video world, all the cool kids are making 360-degree videos, so naturally, the platform known for its cool, artsy videos has made a decision to get in on the action.

"Vimeo's creator community is known for pioneering new video formats and pushing the boundaries of storytelling", said Anjali Sud, SVP & GM of Vimeo's Creator Platform, in a press release "With this launch we hope to usher in a new wave of immersive content that sets the standard for cinematic quality and powerful narratives in a 360 environment". Not only that, the company is now allowing filmmakers to monetize 360 content, as first reported by Venture Beat. Facebook boasts that there have ben more than one million 360 videos posted to the site alongside over 25 million 360 photos to date. YouTube introduced this to its website back in 2015, while Facebook and Twitter have since followed suit. Facebook said in a blog post that more social features are on the way for the company's first official app. "We have been working on 369 for some time".

Vimeo has also tried to make the process of uploading 360 videos relatively easy as well. "Their stories now benefit from our advanced video compression and player customization tools, along with streaming and offline viewing in up to 4K". With the addition of this new feature comes the options to watch 360 content in either monoscopic or stereoscopic mode. Engadget has learned that support for HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift is also coming in the near future.
