Musk bets against Australian billionaire: 100MWh Tesla Powerpack in 100 days

To emphasize his belief that the energy crisis-which has been causing major blackouts in the state-could be solved within 100 days, Musk promised to provide the batteries free-of-charge if it took any longer.

After Rive's suggestion, Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-founder of startup Atlassian, tweeted Musk to see if he was serious.

Cannon-Brookes was definitely appalled by the seriousness of this offer, hence tweeted that he is working to source the finances and the political consent to this system up and running. "Is that serious enough for you?" Rive boasted that the company could install the 100 to 300 megawatt-hours' worth of storage capacity that South Australia needs within 100 days. Musk responded in an affirmative manner and further elaborated that Tesla would offer the system at United States $250 per kWh of storage, with the total project costing about $25 million. "Storage is the technology, and it can solve the problem within the next 100 days or so".

For the last few months, South Australia has been hit by rolling blackouts due to electricity spikes from heatwaves.

Musk quoted a price of $250 per kilowatt hour for 100 megawatt hour systems, which worked out to a price of $25 million for the battery packs.

Battery storage would help prevent further blackouts by increasing the peak amount of energy available to the grid. Batteries, like the ones Tesla is churning out from its massive Nevada Gigafactory, are created to "enable so-called "load-shifting" by charging during times when electricity prices are lower due to less demand, and discharging when demand and prices are high", as Bloomberg described.
