Tesla built a huge solar energy plant on the island of Kauai

So Tesla (which changed its name from Tesla Motors past year largely because of projects like this) offers the Powerpack, a massive battery that can store electricity during the day when supply is abundant, and discharge it when demand goes up after the sun goes down.

While investors on Wall Street debate whether Tesla's ambitious transformation from electric auto maker to sustainable energy company will pay off, its industrial power packs are already having an impact on at least one USA state.

Officially open this Friday, March 10, Tesla's Kauai solar power facility will be located on a 13 MW SolarCity solar farm installation.

The project will also help in the reduction of fossil fuel power by 1.6 million gallons per year, however, it won't end the complete dependency of Kauai on fossil fuels.

Tesla says the power packs will cut KIUC costs per kilowatt hour from 15.5 cents down to 13.9 cents. That's because solar energy business remains to have uncertain economic and regulatory forces. This has been possible due to the new Powerpack technology of Tesla which is the commercial version of the Powerwall through which people store energy in batteries.

But, he added, "the size of the utility grid and the electricity consumed around the world is enormous".

On Wednesday, representatives from Tesla Inc. and Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), as well as dignitaries from throughout Hawaii, were on-hand for a blessing ceremony of the state's first dispatchable solar energy plant.

Before Tesla acquired SolarCity, the two companies agreed in February 2016 to use Tesla's 52 MWh Powerpack to bring 20 years of power to Kaua'i, so this project has been in the works for quite a bit.

THIS HAWAIIAN island is running entirely on solar power - even when the sun goes down. "Now we can do that".
