Bottled Water More Popular Than Soft Drinks Among Americans

A year ago bottled water consumption reached 39.3 gallons per capita, the Wall Street Journal reports, and carbonated soft drinks fell to 38.5 gallons.

United States bottled water sales grew from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015 to 12.8 billion gallons in 2016, BMC said. Seventeen years ago, the research company reports in the release that the per person average of pop consumption hovered around 50 gallons.

In 2016, total US bottled water consumption grew by 8.6 percent to 12.8 billion gallons, up from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015.

"Bottled water effectively reshaped the beverage marketplace", Michael C. Bellas, Beverage Marketing's CEO said in a statement. The Super Bowl, long home to glitzy soda marketing, was used by two premium bottled water brands this year to run in-game ads.

The popularity of packaged water started when Perrier was introduced in the 1970s.

Americans have officially fallen out of love with soda, and are now drinking more bottled water than carbonated drinks. Bottled water consumption dipped in 2008 and 2009, but has grown consistently from 1977 to 2016.

The report comes after another industry tracker, Beverage Digest, in February projected that bottled water volume consumption would surpass carbonated soft drinks in 2017. They added PepsiCo which was supposed to market its new Lifewtr brand instead of its cola flagship. "Amid worries about obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other health matters, bottled water's lack of calories and artificial ingredients, convenience and refreshing taste attracts health-conscious consumers", he said. "As the ultimate portable and affordable beverage, bottled water spawned new usage occasions and habits".

He argued that corporations selling selling bottled water have managed to convince the consumer that it is a healthier choice than sugary soda.
