Joe Biden calls on innovators to help stop cancer

As part of the Moonshot's work, the National Cancer Institute and the University of Chicago previous year launched the Genonic Data Commons, a platform for collecting and storing more than 30,000 cancer patients' genomic datasets. "Your government, that many of you don't like, is the vehicle of how this gets done".

"That's why we need your help-you are the future", he said.

Now, two months after ending his two terms as VP, Biden is at the helm of another cancer-fighting organization, the Biden Foundation, which he and Jill Biden launched on February 1 to support public service initiatives like ending violence against women and protecting children, in addition to finding a cure to the deadly illness.

Biden told the crowd about advancements in cancer research and the ways he's been able to bring healthcare professionals together to further treatment options.

"All of a sudden, there was a new hope, these disciplines coming together, I learned that we had to approach cancer at this moment with the urgency of now", said Biden.

After his speech, Biden stuck around for a half-hour talking to people in the audience, posing for photos and listening to personal stories about how cancer has touched people's lives. The former vice president argued that EHR data has been siloed "by design" and expressed visible frustration that algorithms on Facebook could identify someone with suicidal ideation, but medical centers cannot "find and test people at risk for certain cancers".

"I am optimistic. I'm optimistic about the American people. Our generation can be the first generation on earth that has a completely different understanding of cancer as a controllable and preventable disease rather than a death sentence".

Experts hope an ad hoc tribunal on North Korea may be set up someday, as China would be expected to veto any move in the U.N. During the 40-second video, the man said his father was killed a few days ago. "I am now with my mother and my sister".

Biden said that "we now have powerful new technologies and tools like immunotherapies" that weren't available only a a few years ago.

Republicans have the majority in both houses and the presidency and are determined to press the buttons that resonated throughout Trump's campaign which swept many new congressmen into office as well.

The Obama White House's anti-cancer task force grew, Biden said, out of an offhand remark he made when announcing in October 2015 that he wouldn't run for the Democratic nomination for president.

For now, though, the Obama administration's WhiteHouse.gov pages on the effort are missing and a search for "cancer moonshot" returns zero results.

At times verging on tears, with his voice growing soft, Biden spoke tenderly about his older son Beau who died at 46 in 2015, after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

"I shouldn't have said that but it frustrates me", he said.

"We had lost our son on Memorial Day, and I had been putting off the decision as to whether or not to seek the Democratic nomination for president", Biden explained, at times getting emotional. "But after 45 years of progress, after decades of funding research, training scientists and physicians [and] treating millions of patients, we now have an army".
