Intruder with backpack arrested after breaking into the White House

US President Donald Trump on Saturday praised the US Secret Service for a "fantastic job" following their late night arrest of an intruder who breached the White House grounds while the President was there.

The suspect is from Milpitas, just outside San Jose.

Security footage shows Tran jumping a fence near the Treasury Building, which adjoins the White House, the complaint says. He was charged with entering restricted grounds while carrying a unsafe weapon.

According to the Secret Service, the South and North grounds of the White House were also searched but nothing of concern was found. Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has been briefed on the incident. Uniformed officers with the Secret Service arrested the person without incident, according to a statement.

Tran will appear in DC court for a second time on Monday, and he has now been pictured in a courtroom sketch.

Construction of the new 11-foot-7-inch fence, compared with the current 7-foot (2.13 m) barrier, is due to begin by next year, the Secret Service said in January. He was carrying two cans of mace as well as a USA passport, a computer and one of the president's books, authorities said.

"This is really troubling", said Jonathan Wackrow, an ex-Secret Service agent. "I have an appointment", Tran said when an officer made his way towards him, a Washington Metropolitan Police Department report released on March 11 revealed. "I have an appointment".

When asked how he managed to get here, Tran replied: 'I jumped the fence, ' authorities said.
