Instead, the Justice Department requested on Monday more time to turn over evidence relating to Trump's claim to the House Intelligence Committee, which initially set a Monday deadline for that.

Schiff said that he and Nunes are still waiting for a response to their letter demanding proof from the Justice Department.

The committee - which is investigating alleged Russian interference in the USA election campaign - updated reporters on their progress earlier today. The tweet read, "How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process". Conway retweeted a tweet from Trump published on Monday morning that said, "It's incredible how rude much for the media is to my very hard working representatives".

Spicer also said that Trump was referring to the Obama administration in general, rather than accusing Obama of personally tapping his phone lones.

A number of high-level officials have pushed back against those claims despite the White House's insistence that evidence of such wiretapping exists.

Wiretapping a U.S. citizen would require special permission from a court, and Mr Trump as president would have the ability to declassify that information.

"I think the president has one of two choices: either retract or to provide the information that the American people deserve", McCain said on Sunday.

The president does not have the unilateral authority to order a wiretap on suspected foreign spies operating inside the USA, experts say.

The leaders said the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey, and the head of the National Security Agency would testify at a public hearing on 20 March. "I think there's pretty sound evidence that the microwave is not a sound way of surveilling someone, and I think that has been cleaned up; it was made in jest, so I think we can put that to rest".

Conway appeared on CNN's New Day on Monday morning to discuss the comments.
