Jets Reportedly Used Birthday Cupcakes to Woo Dont'a Hightower

The Pittsburgh Steelers are stirring the waters in free agency and one visit today from New England Patriots' linebacker Dont'a Hightower has sparked some interest among the fans.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that NY even offered him a contract earlier this week but withdrew their offer after he left the team facility without inking his name on the dotted line.

The Patriots have chosen not to retain some key defensive players from their last two Super Bowl teams: Chandler Jones, Jamie Collins, and Logan Ryan.

The contract also includes $19 million in guaranteed money, Hightower's agency, Sports Trust Advisors, posted on Twitter. The Jets apparently pulled out all the stops to secure his services, baking him some cupcakes, sending Jets gear to his mother, and reportedly offering a deal that averaged over $12 million per year, but it ultimately wasn't enough.

New England has put a $3.91 million first-round tender on the three-year pro for the upcoming season, but he can still receive proposals from interested clubs.

As the letter states, information exchanged under the Wayne Tracker alias might prove relevant to the investigation. His office asked Judge Barry Ostrager to schedule a compliance conference at the "earliest possible date".

But before the Jets even confirmed on Monday that his visit was over, speculation began swirling that Hightower always was going to return to the Patriots.

Another school of thought: Hightower and the 33-year-old Harris could have remained fresh throughout the season with fewer snaps.

The first few days of National Football League free agency have been hectic, to say the very least. Reasonable minds may differ on what that price is; personally I think the Jets are better off for not signing Hightower at the price he was rumored to be asking for. The Steelers are searching for a replacement for veteran Lawrence Timmons, who signed with Miami last week after spending a productive decade with Pittsburgh.

Hightower was selected 25th overall by the Patriots in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Dont'a Hightower won't be leaving New England after all. The Jets weren't ever a serious contender, but the Steelers were more intriguing. Think Hightower-Lite. The former Titan and Bill has 292 solo tackles and 14 sacks in five seasons.
