Zahid said the authorities had traveled overseas to an undisclosed country to collect the DNA sample.

He also gave assurances that the Malaysians in North Korea were all safe.

Malaysia said the four men were at the airport on the day Mr Kim was killed and had since left the country.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called on builders to finish construction of a new town in Pyongyang before the birthday of the country's late founder in April, Pyongyang's state media said Thursday.

Rising tensions between the two nations have seen both banning the other's citizens from leaving their country.

Two women - Vietnamese Doan Thi Huang and Indonesian Siti Aisyah - have been arrested and charged with the murder.

"This is because the North Korean embassy can not make a request to claim the body except if the next of kin allows it", he explained.

The killing sparked a dramatic deterioration in the relationship between North Korea and Malaysia, which once had relatively strong ties.

He said the government was still discussing with Kim's family whether to have the body cremated in Malaysia or sent back to North Korea.

Deputy national police Chief Noor Rashid Ibrahim said Kim's family will let the government decide what to do with his body. While Malaysia has not blamed North Korea, there is widespread suspicion that Pyongyang, the country's capital, was responsible.

Kim Jong Nam was the eldest son of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Tensions between North Korea and Malaysia have led to an Asian Cup match being postponed.

Malaysian police have since identified seven other North Koreans wanted in connection with the killing.

Although Malaysia has never directly accused North Korea of being behind the attack, some analysts speculate that it orchestrated it.

It's not clear when the video was shot, but a South Korean National Intelligence Service spokesman verified the son's identity to CNN.
