NC State hires Kevin Keatts as men's basketball coach

NC State needed a better coach who can also recruit well, and Keatts could be that guy.

After two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, two CAA titles, and three seasons at UNC Wilmington, it's no surprise that head coach Kevin Keatts's name has popped up when discussing replacements for many high-profile jobs.

He replaces Mark Gottfried, whom the Wolfpack fired just before the end of this season and then had coach out the final stretch of the year as a lame duck. He grew up in Lynchburg, Va., and has coached at Hargrave Military Academy as well as Marshall University. He previously served as an assistant at Louisville from 2011 to 2014. named him the No. 3 recruiter in the country in 2013 for his efforts.

They moved quickly with the hiring of Keatts, whose Seahawks lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

UNC-Wilmington had a losing record for six straight seasons prior to Keatts taking over.

UNC Wilmington's impressive 2016-17 season ended with a narrow 76-71 first round loss to No. 5 seed Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. The latter hopes to seek a sixth year of eligibility.
