Issa Hayatou Voted Out as African Soccer Head After 29 Years

Four years ago Hayatou was re-elected unopposed, but this time Ahmad made history in the Caf election held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the 60th anniversary of the federation. Hayatou, CAF president for 29 years and seeking an eighth term in office, is being challenged in an election by Madagascar federation head Ahmad.

On the eve of the vote, it was announced that Hayatou and CAF secretary-general Hicham El-Amrani could face criminal charges in Egypt over deals secured for African football marketing and media rights between 2008 and 2028.

He commended the outgoing President of CAF, Issa Hayatou, for his services and contributions to the development of football in Africa in his 29-year headship of the body. The 14-member Southern Africa bloc however say they are behind Ahmad. "This is a victory for Africa", Ahmad posted on his Facebook page shortly after being voted in.

It started with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) when in 2015 the then president Sepp Blatter resigned over an ongoing corruption scandal ending his 17 year reign, he has subsequently received a 6 year ban from football.

His first job, he said earlier Thursday, would be to introduce a new code of ethics for the African soccer body.
