Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, an erstwhile BJP veteran from Mumbai, jumped the gun on Friday to announce the swearing-in of the new chief minister on Sunday at 5 pm even while suspense continues over who will lead the country's largest state.

Wishing the new government well, Surjewala said "we sincerely hope" the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh "will now. concentrate upon fulfilling the promises made to people", including waiving loans of farmers, reducing power tariff and creating jobs.

Uttar Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah to be present at the oath ceremony. A communique to all the 312 BJP MLAs had been sent, asking them to be present in the state capital on that day, a party leader said.

Putting all speculations to end, the BJP named Yogi Adityanath as the next Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister while Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma has been appointed as the deputy chief ministers of the state.

Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy said: "The BJP is in majority and it is their prerogative as to whom they name as the Chief Minister". However, in choosing these leaders, the BJP has also ignored western and north-western Uttar Pradesh, from where it swept the 2017 elections.

In the last two and half years as prime minister and prior to that as chief minister of Gujarat for 12 years, Modi was seen as a strong decisive development oriented leader. Till this morning it was believed that Union Communications Minister and an IIT-BHU alumnus Manoj Sinha was his choice number one.

His appointment is likely to be well received by the vast number of the electorate that supported the BJP in the recently concluded Assembly polls.
