Beto O'Rourke To Challenge Ted Cruz in 2018

The 44-year-old, third-term, fluent Spanish-speaker is set to announce his 2018 Senate run Friday.

Senator Cruz's campaign has yet to respond to O'Rourke's intentions. "He plans to make his decision in the coming weeks".

O'Rourke would be expected to make any announcement in his hometown, at the far western edge of Texas.

U.S. Rep. Joaquín Castro, D-San Antonio, also has been considering entering the Senate race and has promised a decision by the end of April.

O'Rourke is a 3-term Congressman who has supported term limits in the past.

U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-El Paso, appears poised to announce Friday that he is running in 2018 for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Ted Cruz.

O'Rourke grabbed national headlines earlier in March when he took a bipartisan road trip across the U.S. with Representative Will Hurd (R-TX) after a winter storm in the East Coast grounded flights to DC. O'Rourke is still relatively unknown in Washington and in Texas, and El Paso has never produced a statewide elected official.
