Strong thunderstorms forecast to bring tornado risk in South


Patrons were evacuated because of the storm.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport shortly before 9 a.m.

Three weather radars maintained by the U.S. Defense Department were not operable Wednesday in the Southeast as the National Weather Service declared a "tornado emergency" throughout the region.

In Georgia, National Weather Service meteorologist Laura Belanger said about 75 percent of the state could experience severe weather beginning at daybreak and see it increase after 2 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm was moving northwest into Macon County from Elmore County at 45 miles per hour. The greatest likelihood of winds of that strength will come from lines and bands of storms that may move through from time to time.

Multiple Alabama schools announced they will not be open Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

Severe weather is now approaching the Columbus area, with radar showing batches of thunderstorms and heavy rain stretching from Montgomery, Ala., to Eufaula, Ala., and pushing to the northeast toward Auburn, Ala., and the Columbus-Fort Benning area.

The biggest threat of tornadoes comes with the first wave of storms, which is expected to hit the area sometime this afternoon or early evening, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Micheal Emlaw.

A storm complex that's moving across the southern states is expected to interact with a warm front over. Damaging winds, large hail and an isolated tornado will be possible.

Six Flags Over Georgia was closed for the day and, in Augusta, the Masters Par-3 Contest - the traditional kick-off of the major golf tournament - was facing postponement due to the storms.
