Trump lets states block some Planned Parenthood money

Filmmaker Michael Moore slammed as "vicious " President Donald Trump's action Thursday to let states deny federal family planning money to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

"No Title X money can be used for abortion ― women who seek the procedure at Planned Parenthood must pay out-of-pocket ― but most Republicans are still opposed to granting public dollars to the organization", according to The Huffington Post.

The bill's passage was secured when Vice President Pence, who tried to defund Planned Parenthood as governor of IN, cast the tie-breaking vote IN the Senate to approve the legislation.

President Trump has not yet released a statement about the signing of the bills.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List, and Penny Nance, president of Concerned Women for America, attended the bill signing. But an attempt to fund women's health centers that do not provide abortions in Texas has shown little, if any, progress, the Associated Press reported last March.

Abortion providers in Texas that receive federal dollars to offer reproductive health services to low-income people are likely to lose that funding under a measure President Trump signed Thursday.

"It's a pro-life measure because it allows people's desire not to see abortion providers given taxpayer funding to be expressed through policy and after all, we cherish our democracy and the taxpayers ought to have a say in where the money goes", Scheidler said on Thursday. Trump has pledged to defund Planned Parenthood in the past, so it came as no surprise when he signed the bill into law.

As a middle ground, Donald Trump has proposed preserving federal funding for Planned Parenthood if it stops providing abortion services.

As Julie Rovner notes for our Shots blog, Planned Parenthood obtains about $60 million annually from Title X, and in the group's most recent annual report, its affiliates received $553.7 million total from federal, state and local governments - or, about half its total funding. CMS spokeswoman Jane Norris said in an email, "President Trump is delivering on his promise to give states the flexibility that they need to make health care decisions that best meet their citizens' unique needs".

"Our supporters contacted their members of Congress asking them to vote yes as this bill made its way through the House and the Senate".

She said it is impossible to know the exact effect the loss of Planned Parenthood in Arizona would have, but that "it will have a significant impact ... because the rest of the facilities can't absorb all of those women and families".

The 100-year-old institution operates 661 clinics providing health services to 2.5 million patients every year, many of who are low income.

She said women's "worst fears" are coming true. The American Health Care Act called for partially slashing funds dedicated to the group, which is criticized by opponents for providing abortion services. Mostly women, but some men also, all there to fight for the organization.
