Mets edge Marlins 9-8 after 16 innings of play

Cespedes leads the majors with six homers on the season - five coming in the past three games - and Michael Conforto lined a game-tying double in the eighth as NY won its fifth game in a row.

It all went about as well as you'd expect it to go, in the longest Mets game since July 19, 2015. Cincinnati had scored at least six runs in each game during its winning streak.

D'Arnaud's homer came on the 475th pitch of the night, and the first from Adam Conley (1-1), who had been scheduled to start Friday's game. Edinson Volquez, who's next in line in the rotation, is on regular rest and will face off against Mets ace Noah Syndergaard Friday night. The Marlins will recall a minor-leaguer on Friday. One of those relievers, Miami's Nick Wittgren, who pitched three flawless innings with three strikeouts, was sent down to Triple-A New Orleans after the game.

Both teams will need their starters to pitch deep into the games, as the bullpens were used heavily tonight.

D'Arnaud's blast was the latest in terms of innings by a Mets catcher in franchise history. "It was 16 innings of really good baseball up to that point and I just didn't do my job".

"Kind of", Mattingly said when asked if he were surprised by Collins' choice, "but I try to stay out of the other manager's (decisions)".

Down 8-7 in the eighth, pinch hitter Michael Conforto doubled off David Phelps and advanced to third on the throw, scoring d'Arnaud from first and tying the game at 8-all.

One player not lacking in power is Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, power he displayed again on Wednesday night, bashing this monster homer off of Wei-Yin Chen.

Lynch getting traded to the Raiders?
The Raiders need a power back like Lynch to pair with Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington to round out the backfield. The Raiders are looking to replace running back Latavius Murray who recently departed for the Vikings in free agency.

Chris Davis: Chris Davis hits second homer
It appears Pomeranz has put his spring training troubles behind him as he allowed only four hits and walked one while fanning six. When Wright is at the top of his game, hitting his knuckleball is more hard than trying to slice a mosquito in half with a sword.

The Mets appeared to tie the score in the seventh on a single by Jay Bruce. The challenge will be to show the 2016 comparisons can cease come Sunday though, seeing as how that was the only series the Marlins won against them.

Gsellman struggled against the Marlins in his season debut last week, allowing three earned runs over five innings, a game in which right-handed hitters went 6-for-13 against him.

Miami (4-5) was led by Marcell Ozuna, who hit a grand slam and has four homers and a major-league-leading 16 RBIs this season.

The Marlins answered with four of their own in the bottom of the fifth as they batted around in the inning.

Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who figures to start per usual, drills more tape-measure homers than anybody else in the game - and it is also not even close. That ended when Miguel Rojas led off the fifth with a single. After Manny Pina and Orlando Arcia singled to start the third, Nelson put down a sacrifice bunt that set up Jonathan Villar's run-scoring groundout and Thames' RBI single.

Cespedes and Wilmer Flores hit back-to-back solo homers to the start the third inning.

A gray cat went scrambling for cover in the Marlins Park outfield midway through Miami's home opener, and no wonder, given the barrage off Marcell Ozuna's bat. The Mets benched 3B Jose Reyes because he was hitting.054 (2-for-37).
