Diabetes Diagnoses On The Rise In US Children

More and more kids in America are being diagnosed with diabetes and the cause is yet to be known.

Diabetes is characterized by a rise in blood sugar levels beyond normal parameters, which affects the way the body produces and metabolizes insulin.

It is estimated that in the US, 29 million people have diabetes, with the majority of individuals having the type 2 variant.

In people with type 2 diabetes, the body doesn't use insulin properly.

Rutter said that the introduction of new clinical agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes into clinical practice, specifically glucagonlike peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, could alter future trends. The adjusted relative annual increase in the incidence for type 2 diabetes was 4.8%.

The factors underlying the increase aren't entirely clear, she said.

Gorsuch sworn in as US Supreme Court justice
Throughout his career, Judge Gorsuch has consistently stood on the side of religious freedom and the right to life of the unborn. This particular oath, Kennedy said in brief remarks, also dates to 1789 and "reminds us that we as a people are bound together".

Elon Musk Says Tesla Will Reveal A Semi Truck In September
The automaker recently raised $1.2 billion and had previously raised $1.5 billion in May past year to fund its upcoming Model 3. Adding a semi truck to the production schedule for Tesla is an ambitious project.

Scientists from the University of Gothenburg found there was a 40 per cent decrease in heart disease and stroke in people with type 1 diabetes, while a 20 per cent decrease was observed among those with type 2 diabetes. The annual increase in type 2 diabetes in black children was 6.3 percent. Asian Americans saw the second-highest rate of new dignoses.

"The increase in incidence of type 2 diabetes is likely related primarily to the increases in overweight and obesity in youth, although this is not the only reason", said Mayer-Davis.

In-Depth [retrospective cohort]: This study involved 36 869 patients with type 1 diabetes and 457 473 patients with type 2 diabetes drawn from the Swedish National Diabetes Register, matched (by age, sex, and county) with controls from the general Swedish population. These patients were compared to similar people without diabetes (the "control" group). The mean age of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes was 35.3 years and 65.2 years, respectively, and the mean duration of diabetes prior to entry into the registry was 20.0 and 5.7 years, respectively. There was no significant difference in the rate of hospitalization for heart failure in patients with type 1 diabetes compared to controls; there was a 29% reduction in hospitalization for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to controls (HR 0.71; 95%CI 0.69 to 0.73).

Even with these improvements, people with either type of diabetes still have much higher overall rates of premature death and heart disease than the control groups, the study authors noted. More than 75,000 Americans die of diabetes each year, the CDC says. These risk factors include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, signs of early kidney damage and poor blood sugar control.

"These findings lead to many more questions", said Barbara Linder, M.D., Ph.D., senior advisor for childhood diabetes research at NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

The second study provided some positive news, however, detailing Swedish researchers looking into the incidence of heart disease and stroke in both types of diabetes, finding that there was actually a drop seen.
