Panthers give Short monster contract extension

However, as contract site Spotrac points out, Short's first two years are better than nearly any defensive player in football, save for Von Miller and Olivier Vernon.

According to a Monday morning report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Carolina Panthers and defensive tackle Kawann Short have already come to terms on a new longterm contract.

Big deal: Panthers signed franchise DT Kawann Short to a 5-year, $80 million contract, per sources.

In addition to his six sacks from a season ago, Short also managed 55 total tackles, one forced fumble and three pass defenses.

The Panthers lost some key players following their run to Super Bowl 50, but the loss of star cornerback Josh Norman, who had his franchise tag rescinded, significantly impacted their secondary in 2016.

"KK has been very important to what we've been able to accomplish on defense", Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said, via Carolina's team website. Norman became a free agent and signed a blockbuster deal a few days later with a Washington Redskins, leaving a gaping hole in Carolina's secondary. That ranks him third among all defensive tackles in the NFL. I knew I was either going to sign the tender or get an extension.

Short said he wanted to stay with the Panthers because they took a chance on him with a late second-round pick in 2013 when other teams passed him over.

A second-round draft choice in 2013 out of Purdue, where he started 50 games, Short totaled five sacks over his first two National Football League seasons while helping the Panthers rank in the top 10 in total defense both years. Off the field, KK is a top-notch young man and great representative of our team.
