When Kathrine Switzer first ran the marathon in 1967, women were not allowed to compete. He crossed the finish line with a time of about 3 hours and 50 minutes. In her memoir, Switzer recalled the Syracuse coach telling her the 26-mile marathon was too long for a "fragile woman".
