Trump says he will 'stand up for our dairy farmers'

New York's senators are pushing to change a Canadian trade policy they say is hurting dairy farmers.

Schumer was in Watertown Friday and had this to say and commented on the problem.

Standing up for dairy farmers in Wisconsin "demands fair trade with all of our trading partners", Trump said, "and that includes Canada".

Trump also criticized the USA trading regime, which calls for a waiting period, and consultations that can stretch to three months or beyond.

Trump on Tuesday responded to appeals for help from the dairy industry during an event in Wisconsin, where he also renewed his complaints about the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The governors of Wisconsin and NY sent Trump a letter Tuesday urging him to take action.

The current system limits the amount of dairy and poultry Canada can import before a tariff kicks in.

Panthers give Short monster contract extension

"We know that dairy producers in the U.S are going through tough times; however, incorrectly laying the blame on an unrelated Canadian domestic policy will not improve their situation".

"I am asking, please, that dairy processors think through how they can handle this extra milk in the short-term in order to sustain the long-term success of Wisconsin's dairy industry", said Brancel.

Senior finance officials who briefed reporters on the meetings suggest the order would run counter to protections Canada has secured through NAFTA. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has blamed the Senate for delaying the confirmation of Trump's USA trade representative.

The National Milk Producers Federation says the incomes of dairy farmers around the country depend heavily on the country's export to Mexico.

"With our growing concern that even more of our milk producers and our processors will be affected, I urge the federal government to call on Canada to reconsider these harmful regulations and continue our courteous, mutually beneficial trade relations", Cuomo said in a statement.

"We're going to make some very big changes", he said.
