Apple also tested a prototype that had a glass back with more dramatic curves on the top and bottom, similar to the original iPhone design from 2007.

The report says that Apple is testing a near bezel-less front panel, as we have seen reported since past year. It also claims the premium version will come with a screen that covers the entire front of the phone, giving it a display larger than that found on the iPhone 7 Plus on a device the size of an iPhone 7.

This iPhone Edition is allegedly going to have an "all-screen" front encased in glass and a steel frame. Apple is also aiming to reduce the overall size of the handset by integrating the home button into the screen itself via software in a similar manner to Samsung's S8, the people said. Even if it's not curved, it'll still have an OLED screen that takes up most of the front of the device, though.

First, Pacific Crest Securities' Andy Hargreaves said on Tuesday that Apple is facing supply chain headwinds that may force it to ditch the fingerprint reader altogether. Apple is also reportedly working on augmented reality and depth-of-field technology for the iPhone 8, but those reports are unconfirmed.

Apple used a glass-on-glass design for the iPhone for two years, 2010's iPhone 4 and 2011's iPhone 4s.

Glass suppliers have been struggling to produce heavily curved glass, which is why Apple is more likely to use "more subdued curves" for the handset. The company is also testing a variant without the curved screens. It is possible that Apple is testing more than one prototypes at a time for the upcoming device.

If the recent rumour turns out to be true then the next iPhone will come with a fingerprint sensor embedded into the display. The provider of this fingerprint sensor on the screen does not know if they can solve the problems and provide all the production that the iPhone 8 needs.

The double-lens camera on the upcoming redesigned iPhone could be oriented vertically instead of horizontally, as on the iPhone 7 Plus. It's still unclear what AR plans Apple has, but there are suggestions it will require new camera sensors.
