Jon Ossoff Landslide Reinforces Resistance to Trump — Triumph in Georgia

Democrat Jon Ossoff, 30, nearly turned a GOP stronghold blue Tuesday night in a special election to see who will take over Georgia's 6th Congressional District, CBS News reports.

A 30-year-old political novice, Ossoff is running as the lone Democrat against a field of 17 Republicans for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives vacated when Trump named Tom Price to be secretary of health and human services.

We're nominated for a Webby Award-but we need your vote to win!

In some ways, Tuesday night was a repeat of last week's special election in Kansas. "It is hard to predict", he said Tuesday on CNN. And this is the second time in as many weeks that Democrats had high hopes and didn't see their best case scenarios realized when all the votes were cast.

"Everyone is looking for national implications, but all politics is local", he said.

"Every single vote Jon Ossoff receives is a rebuke of Trump from within GA-06".

Should he secure an upset, it would mark a stunning embarrassment for the president and signal that next year's mid-term elections are essentially up for grabs.

Ossoff was a documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide before he jumped into the race.

Trump ran historically poorly for a Republican in this district. So we are going to be united.

Price won the district in November with over 60 percent of the vote, but Trump beat his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, by barely a percentage point in the district.

Under normal circumstances, a Republican win would be in little doubt. With the slogan "Make Trump Furious", he aims to galvanize opposition to a president struggling with low approval ratings.

A new Gallup poll shows just 45 per cent of Americans think Trump will keep his campaign promises, down from 62 per cent in early February.

Ossoff almost pulled off a major upset win in a district comprising some of Atlanta's wealthiest, best-educated suburbs - an area that has been represented in Congress by Republicans for almost four decades.

"I don't imagine that the outcome of the runoff is in that much question, but does Senator Graham have something there, that the Republican Party needs to pay attention to changing demographics, particularly in the South?" the reporter asked. On Twitter, he had called Ossoff a "super liberal" who doesn't even live in the district, and on a robocall, he went further.

Ossoff, who finished with about 48%, will now head to a runoff on June 20 against Republican Karen Handel, the former Georgia Secretary of State, who bested 10 other GOP hopefuls with about 20% of the overall vote in the unusual all-party primary. It said: "The reason is clear: voters are rejecting Trump and his policies.".
