UC Berkeley calls off Ann Coulter talk for security reasons

"We have been unable to find a safe and suitable venue for your planned April 27th event featuring Ann Coulter", Vice Chancellor Scott Biddy and student affairs Vice Chancellor Stephen Sutton wrote to the Berkeley College Republicans Tuesday.

UC Berkeley has canceled Ann Coulter's planned talk on April 27 because it can not guarantee the safety of the right-wing commentator or the safety of attendees or those protesting her appearance.

Former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopolous canceled an appearance and had to flee for his safety in February after protesters rioted, causing several injuries, outside the event site.

The violence and protests caused by Yiannopoulos's invitation garnered national attention and forced officials to put the campus on lockdown.

The decisions by UC-Berkeley to cancel both events involving high-profile Republicans are especially notable given the campus's role during the 1960s and 1970s as the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement and its long tradition of social protest.

Later, during an appearance on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight, she promised to give the speech despite the university's cancellation. "This is as clear-cut a case as it gets that public universities are using taxpayer dollars to shut down conservative speech, while allowing liberal speech only", the post reads. "I'm an American. I have constitutional rights".

Brown noted that Coulter had agreed to a number of demands by the university - such as the speech would be delivered in the afternoon and only be open to students - while offering her own requests to be upheld by the university.

"What are they going to do?"

Mogulof said campus police had learned that some of the groups that took part in those clashes 'planned to target the appearance of Ann Coulter on campus'.

While Registered Student Organizations like yours are independent from the University, and have the right to invite whoever they'd like to speak here, the campus retains responsibility for ensuring safety and security during such events. "It's unfortunate that people who think the university's efforts to keep students and the speaker herself safe are 'silly'".

"It has nothing to do with anyone's political views". "Everything we're doing is so the speaker and students can actually exercise their rights without disruption", Mogulof reportedly said. Pro- and anti-Trump protesters clashed off campus in Berkeley on Saturday.

University officials have yet to respond to those declarations.

The university also wrote that it wanted to maintain the ability of student groups to invite speakers to campus, and reiterated Berkeley's "deep commitment to the values and principles embedded in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution".
