Utah Rep. Chaffetz says he won't run for re-election

Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, on Wednesday said he will not run for reelection in 2018.

The decision earned a swipe from former Utah Republican governor Jon Huntsman, who once employed Chaffetz as his campaign manager and chief of staff.

According to a statement Chaffetz, a Republican representing Utah's 3rd Congressional District, released on Facebook, he said, "it is time", citing his stance of serving only as long as one needs to. Many of you have heard me advocate, "Get in, serve, and get out".

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said Wednesday he will not be on the ballot in 2018, forgoing a re-election bid and writing off a run for U.S. Senate.

Chaffetz said he has "no ulterior motives" is healthy and confident he would re-elected.

The reasons go beyond the recent questions about his role as the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is tasked with keeping a check on fraud and waste in the White House and the federal government.

After wrapping up his Presidential campaign in December, McMullin told a Reddit AMA that he has not made a decision about his political future, and sources say that hasn't changed-though McMullin's operation found out only this morning that Chaffetz would be leaving office.

Thank you! Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Representative in the United States House of Representatives.

Chaffetz said he announced now so that another candidate could rise in the 3rd Congressional District.

We now await any further decisions by Chaffetz, who is only 50 years old and could have years of public service ahead of him.

"He's been toying with this idea after residents have come to him ask him to run and I would be lying to you if I told you he wasn't looking at it", said Corey Norman, a spokesman for the mayor. However, in the wake of Donald Trump's election, that tide may have been turning.

Chaffetz ascended to national prominence as chair of the powerful House Oversight Committee. "I'm happy he'll be able to spend more time with his family, which I feel is really important".

- Why is Jason Chaffetz suddenly retiring from Congress?

The writing was on the wall for Chaffetz after the special House elections in Kansas and Georgia.

Since the announcement, Chaffetz has grandstanded like he's exhausted of public servantship, amid rumors he might run for Utah governor in 2020. I'm anal about domain real estate because I used to work for Network Solutions / Verisign back before the dot-com crash.

Utah Democrat Kathryn Allen has outpaced Chaffetz in fundraising.

For Chaffetz, and his gubernatorial ambitions, the safest place to be right now is the private sector.

Whatever he decides, it is nearly certain that we won't have seen the last of Chaffetz when he leaves office in 2019.
