Volvo planning to export China-made electric cars

At the Shanghai show, the industry's biggest marketing event this year, nearly every global and Chinese brand plans to display at least an electric concept vehicle, if not a model ready for sale, alongside its latest SUVs and sedans.

Sales of electric and gasoline-electric hybrids fell 4.4 percent from a year earlier to 55,929 vehicles while sales of SUVs rose 21 percent to 2.4 million.

"It's tough for someone with an EV to come and take away market share from SUVs", said Ben Cavender of China Market Research Group.

Shanghai Auto Show visitors can make their way to the W Motors and ICONIQ Motors booth 5A03, where they'll be able to admire the ICONIQ Seven Premium and VIP Editions, as well as the exclusive Lykan HyperSport and Fenyr SuperSport Concept between April 19th and April 28th.

China's central government and many local authorities are keen to reduce congestion and air pollution and have dangled various incentives for car-sharing, such as eased licensing requirements and guaranteed parking. Volvo expects about 15 percent of customers for its second-generation XC60 to pick the powertrain. He said he expects the vehicle to arrive in showrooms before the end of next year.

With China's fast-expanding middle class adopting modern, mobile lifestyles, passenger-car sales have almost quintupled over the past decade.

In addition to the E-motion concept, the Shanghai International Automotive Show also saw the brand unveil a fully-customised version of the MG ZS compact SUV.

"We follow the same goal with all our products: to provide solutions for a cleaner, more energy-efficient world", said Tom Tan, President, BorgWarner China.

The Swedish automaker, which is owned by the Chinese company Geely, is making a big bet on electric vehicles.

Production is slated to begin in three years.

Daimler, which has trailed German peers BMW and VW-owned Audi in terms of expanding its Chinese manufacturing capacity, is also preparing to make Mercedes-Benz electric cars in Beijing.

Lynk & Co will offer what executives called a "lifetime" warranty, and also plan to allow consumers to pay for access to a vehicle on a subscription basis - by the month or mile - instead of committing to a purchase.
