Patriots extend RB James White on a three-year contract

With Gillislee's status still unsettled, the Patriots now have five running backs under contract for the 2017 season.

The New England Patriots signed running back James White to a three-year extension that will tie him to the club through 2020, according to ESPN.com's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

For comparison's sake, the Patriots haven't paid any running back more than $2 million in a single season since 2010.

Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead (signed as an unrestricted free agent in March) become free agents after the 2017 season.

In Super Bowl LI, White had 14 receptions for 110 yards and one receiving touchdown.

White, who scored the game-winning touchdown for the Patriots in overtime of Super Bowl 51, total 717 yards and five touchdowns from scrimmage while appearing in all 16 games a season ago. That the Patriots put the ball in White's hands at that critical moment spoke volumes of the team's confidence in him.

It's also worth noting with the contract extension, White could potentially one day challenge Kevin Faulk for the best third-down back in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. Even when he doesn't make the play, he feels worse about it than you do.

James White, who was with the New England Patriots since he entered the league through 2014 NFL Draft, recorded 60 receptions for 551 yards and only 39 carries for 166 yards in 2016 NFL season. "I've seen him grow up as a rookie, to working his tail off and becoming a big factor in all these games".
